‘I love you too much – do you understand? I shouldn’t even tell you that, should I? I love even being near you – being near you – geographically. And that’s all I am now.
WTF?!?
That’s not just insta-love and insta-lust, that’s insta-insanity.
Apart from Jeff, is there any sane, sensible character in this?

Doesn’t really sound like it’s insta-anything. Sounds like it’s been building for a while. But without knowing anything beyond this one line, it could be just as normal as it is crazy too. Love does that to people. There are entire libraries of stories, songs, and poems dedicated to that idea. Of course, this is Highsmith, so we’re probably looking at something considerably more heightened and screwed up.

Trust me this is messed up. It’s what I love about Highsmith, she does messed up really well. Having read on a little bit from that quote I now have a hunch that the narrator is quite unreliable and may not be able to distinguish between reality and … fantasy? dream? illusion? Not sure, but am thrilled to find out. š

I’m just saying the quote by itself, without context, isn’t quite so innocuous. But I do consider the source here. The nature of any thriller is that it wouldn’t be worth reading if it wasn’t messed up. That’s what Highsmith does best.

I know you’re right. The quote by itself doesn’t give away all the connotations that come with the context of the story and knowing this is a Highsmith novel. I’m enjoying it immensely, tho.
I bet she had fun writing this line:
“I love even being near you ā being near you ā geographically. ”
I can just picture her rolling her eyes at the line, taking a swig of something, and typing it out.

Absolutely. There are certain authors whose total expression somehow ends up on the page. She strikes me as one of those just based on what little I’ve read of her so far.

Which of hers have you read?
She’s another author whose complete works I’m slowly reading through, not as a challenge, just because I enjoy her books so much.

Just excerpts mostly, nothing complete, but enough to intrigue me. She’s been in my TBR for a while. I just haven’t committed.

Well, if you ever pick up one of hers, I’ll be looking for updates and for what you make of her books. š

I’m sure it’ll happen at some point. It’s actually your fault she’s on my radar at all.
